Text description provided by the architect. The headquarters of West Bund Development Group is located on the west bank of Shanghai, adjacent to the West Bund Art Center and facing the Huangpu River to the east. The site is full of lush trees such as grapefruit and camphor. High winds, rustling trees and dim lights make up the impression of the site. The existing building is a two-story steel structure built in 2008. The building area is 2000 square meters and the grid size is 6X6m. The main entrance is on the west side. The exterior walls are covered with brown aluminum shutters. The dense landscape, blurred circulation and isolated atrium make the interior difficult to identify.
The past two decades have witnessed tremendous changes in the built environment and waterfront space on the West Bank. Existing conditions cannot meet the needs of today’s headquarters office. The transformation aims to transform the serious and hierarchical image of the state-owned office into a friendly environment that encourages sharing and communication. Considering the scenery of the Huangpu River and the dense vegetation, the building is imagined as a greenhouse that emphasizes its horizontal quality. The terraces extend from the existing structure to the landscape in different directions, thus becoming a volume composed of stacked boxes.
This gesture will mediate various factors on the website. First of all, the terrace can easily enter the outdoor space according to the surrounding environment. In addition, volume manipulation is an effective way to enhance form and space, while hiding defects in details. Finally, in order to avoid sprinkler systems, the building area is less than 3000 square meters, which is quite limited. The terrace helps extend the floor from the inside to the outside without increasing the area.
Based on the concept of the terrace, the evacuation cycle is arranged on the outside to maintain the integrity and freedom of the inside. In this 60m long plan, the outer terrace increases the flexibility of circulation. The winding staircase enhances the formal expression and promenade experience.
The new atrium divides the plan into two areas, a meeting area on the south and an open office on the north. Sunlight spills into the atrium through the glass on the west side, like a tall window. Food storage rooms and recreation areas are scattered around the atrium. The partition wall is mainly glass. The view of the day and the river flows directly into the open space through the small room.
Floor-to-ceiling glass is mostly used in the building envelope. Considering the limited budget, we did not pursue the slim effect of window frames, but tried to hide these defects in shadows and other elements. For example, the two canopies in the west emphasize metal materials and slender edges to contrast the quality of the cube. They cast shadows and block the glare from the west.
There are two kinds of railings on the terrace. The west façade and stairs are made of corrugated perforated aluminum. To the south and north are 950mm solid walls and 250mm steel rails. The movement of solids and voids emphasizes the mass of accumulation in its corners. They will also cover a uniform veil on the glass curtain wall. The east façade is partially covered by perforated panels to create a rhythm that echoes the trees on the east side.
The project attempts to achieve a fluid atmosphere and transparent quality that echoes the landscape. The building becomes several horizontal lines extending between the trees and blending into shadows and wind.
